Announcements

Horizon Students & Parents: Here is a golden opportunity to help the Music & Theatre Department raise some money and enjoy some delicious food.  Tuesday, October 4th the Subway at 136th & Orchard Pkwy will donate 20% of the cost of your food to the Music & Theatre Department.  So mark your calendars today and come support this important program!!

Horizon FBLA will be hosting our annual blood drive on Tuesday, October 11. You can save up to 3 lives by donating one time! You must be at least 16 to donate. See Mr. Wilke in E0505 for more information and permission forms.

Students..... If you have a mistake on your ID, didn't have your picture taken by the photographers for an ID, didn't get your Activity Pass printed on your ID, or have already lost your ID....see Mrs. Cummings in counseling for assistance. Remember, you will need your Horizon ID for admission to Homecoming activities such as the dance! 

It’s that time!!  Come to the Main Lobby and give us your nominations for Homecoming Royalty.  You can offer your nominations any time between periods 2 – 8.

Speech and Debate Club will have its first official meeting on Monday, October 3rd from 3:00PM to 4:00PM in room D0408.  See you there!

Cherry Drive Elementary is looking for students at Horizon to help them with their Fall Festival/Trunk or Treat. They would like you to decorate a car for their annual Fall Festival/Trunk or Treat. They need to arrive at 11 to get the trunks ready and the Festival is from 12-2:30pm on October the 15th.

Please join “Juniors for Seniors” in E0504 for our first meeting today at 12:35.  This is a great opportunity to earn some community service hours and interact with the elderly in our community!  Hope to see you there!

The SOAR Honors program is excited to announce its annual trip to the Genesee Ropes Course! We encourage all SOAR students to take part in this fun day of team building.  You can pick up an information sheet and permission forms in room E0504 or on Mrs. Schafer's desk in the downstairs staff center.  Completed forms are due to Mrs. Schafer this Friday, so pick up your forms today and get them filled out!  

Counseling

Attention Seniors: Do you or your parents have questions about how to fill out your FAFSA? You are in luck! Adams 12 Five Star Schools is hosting "FAFSA Fest" on Saturday October 8th from 10 to 2 at the Educational Support Center. Students and parents can get 1 on 1 help from a FAFSA expert. Please be sure to bring your 2015 tax returns with you. More information and instructions on how to RSVP are available on the Adams 12 website or the HHS Counseling website, or from your counselor. Attention Seniors:  The Boettcher and Daniels Fund Scholarship applications are now open!
These two scholarship opportunities are highly selective, full-ride scholarships with lengthy applications that are due in in October/November.
Boettcher Foundation Scholarship: The Boettcher Foundation scholarship deadline is October 25th. Students can get on the Boettcher website to take a "Senior Competitiveness Quiz" to see if they may be good candidates for the application process. For more information, go to the website at www.boettcherscholarshiponline.org/eligibility/ to take the eligibility quiz. See Mrs. Neumann in Counseling if you have questions about the scholarship.
Daniels Fund: The Daniels Fund Scholarship deadline is November 30thThis scholarship pays for 100% of your college expenses; however, families must first show economic need before the application process can begin and all applicants must complete the 2017/18 FAFSA prior to applying.  For more information, go to the Daniels Fund website at www.DanielsFund.org.  Please inform Mrs. Neumann if you are applying for the Daniels Fund scholarship.

Attention Sophomores & Juniors:  TAKE THE PSAT/NMSQT
On Wednesday, October 19th, Horizon High School will offer the PSAT/NMSQT exam to students.  You can sign up to take the test in the Counseling Office.  
TO SIGN UP, YOU MUST BRING EITHER CASH OR CHECK IN THE AMOUNT OF $25 TO THE COUNSELING OFFICE.  YOU WILL NOT BE SIGNED UP WITHOUT PAYMENT.  (We have limited spaces for the exam, spots will only be available for the first 200 students who sign up.)  The deadline to sign up is Wednesday, October 12th.  The test cost is $25. 
The test will be given at the Adams 12 Educational Support Center (ESC). *Transportation will not be provided.
The PSAT/NMSQT is the only way juniors can qualify to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. 
**Taking the PSAT/NMSQT is an excellent opportunity for sophomores to practice for the spring PSAT test and for Juniors to prepare for the spring SAT test.
